How Your Chiropractor Can Help You Detoxify Your Body
When people hear the word detox, they tend to think of the now popular juice cleanses or taking on a very rigorous exercise program to “sweat” the toxins out. Thankfully, there are other types of detox treatments, such as chiropractic care, that are more effective at ridding your body of toxic and gentler to the system.
Why Detoxify?
Toxins are any substance that has harmful effects on the body and can enter our body from three main sources:
The environment (air pollution, solvents, pesticides, radiation, etc.)
Our lifestyle choices (diet, cosmetics, nicotine, alcohol, etc.)
Our internal body function (bacteria, yeast, stress, metabolic reactions, depression, etc.)
When our body has an increase in toxins—whether internal or externally sourced—our systems begin to experience a “toxic burden.” At first, the effects may not be noticeable. However, over time the effects will overwhelm the body and it becomes increasingly difficult to ever feel normal.
A full body detox through your chiropractor can help you restore your health by removing exposure to the toxins that are causing you to feel bad. Additionally, when your body experiences an increased toxin burden, it tends to store fat to protect your body. An effective detoxification program can help reduce the toxin burden, boost your metabolic function, and maintain a healthy weight.
Detoxification is not a one-and-done process. Just as we regularly change the oil in our cars to flush their systems and optimize performance, we should do the same for our bodies. If you are feeling progressively sluggish, tired, achy, or run down, maybe it’s time for you to change your “filter.”
Myths About Healthy "Detox" Techniques
There are a few common myths about detoxes that we feel we need to debunk.
1. Popular juice cleanses and drinks will fast track a successful detox
There are no shortcuts or fast remedies for good health. While some juice cleanses and detoxifying drinks are good for other reasons, they cannot detoxify your body on their own. Our bodies are complicated systems that must go through two phases to successfully detoxify. And while phase one requires the vitamins and nutrients from fruits and vegetables, the other phase requires protein, which is not found in common juice cleanses and detoxifying drinks.
2. Laxatives will help me “stay regular” and detox my system
Pardon us for the TMI talk, but staying regular is an important step in detoxification. The body eliminates toxins through feces, urine, sweat, and your breath (!). Staying regular is essential in getting rid of toxins. However, using laxatives to maintain regularity is not. Laxatives draw water from the intestinal walls and do not flush our waste products or descale the intestinal walls. Additionally, long-term laxative use may have a counter effect on your health.
3. DIY Detoxing
Playing doctor and trying detox programs and equipment at home can be very dangerous. There is an increased chance of infection or injury if not done properly. Rather than trying a detox program at home, focus on improving your diet and also consult a professional, such as your chiropractor.
Safely Detoxify Your Body With Chiropractic Care
When your body starts experiencing toxin burden, some of the toxins are stored in areas of the body such as your joints and visceral fat. Even the spine can be affected. For those of us who already have misalignment present in the spine (this is not uncommon), toxin buildup can be exacerbated because of its effect on local nerve energy flow. Your chiropractor can help detoxify these areas by restoring spine alignment and opening up and supporting our natural detox pathways. Regular spinal adjustments are a great way to help prevent your body from storing and building up toxins as well.
Your chiropractor might also recommend a safe, guided detox program to help you restore healthy detoxification and elimination functions. The benefit to these programs, such as the Core Restore program we offer at our office, is that they provide the body with all of the micronutrients, phytonutrients, and clean protein that is needed to successfully detoxify.
